Transport: The Community Connector
Across Australia, shifting population patterns, ageing demographics, urbanisation, and regional growth continue to transform how people move. These changes exert strong pressure on transport networks and require new models for planning, investment, and service delivery. At the same time, the tyranny of distance remains a defining national challenge: long travel times, dispersed populations, and geographic isolation shape accessibility, equity, and economic opportunity in profound ways.
Transport: the Society Connector is the second in a three-part series exploring the fundamental role transport plays in shaping how Australians live, work, access services, and stay connected – across cities, regions, and remote communities. This session examines the social and demographic forces influencing transport behaviour, the evolving mix of modal choices available to travellers, and the strategic challenges involved in meeting future transport demand.
